How to style an oversized t-shirt: looks for women

An oversized tee on a woman gets read two ways. Done well, it looks like she picked it on purpose, effortless, a little masculine-feminine tension that works. Done without thought, it just looks like a shirt that swallowed her.

The line between the two is almost always the bottom half. An oversized top needs something with shape underneath it, or the whole silhouette goes shapeless. Here are six ways to get the balance right.

Tee and bike shorts

The easiest one to start with. Bike shorts give the bottom half a close, defined shape, which lets the tee stay loose up top without the outfit reading as pyjamas. Tuck the front hem in loosely, add sneakers, and you have a look that takes two minutes and works every time.

Front-tucked into a skirt

A half-tuck into a midi or mini skirt is the fastest way to make an oversized tee feel dressed. The tuck defines your waist, the skirt gives the bottom structure, and the loose tee on top reads as an intentional contrast instead of an oversight. Denim skirts and slip skirts both work here.

T-shirt, biker shorts, and an open shirt

Layer a cropped or open shirt over the tee and biker shorts combination and you get texture without adding bulk. Keep the shirt short or tie it at the waist so it does not compete with the tee's own length. This is the one that photographs the most interesting.

Oversized tee as a dress

Wear it alone, belted at the waist, with the length landing mid-thigh or above the knee. The belt is what makes this work. Without it, the tee just hangs. With it, you get shape at the waist and volume everywhere else, which is the whole appeal of the oversized-dress trick.

Tee tucked into high-waisted jeans

The classic, and it earns that status. High-waisted straight or mom jeans give your lower half a defined line, and a full or half front tuck keeps the waist visible. This is the safest option if you are still figuring out how you like to wear the cut.

Tee and joggers or bike leggings

For an off-duty look, pair the tee with joggers or leggings rather than another loose piece. One loose layer, one fitted/relaxed layer.

The rule that runs under all of them

Fitted/Relaxed bottom, loose top, or a tuck that puts a waistline back into the silhouette. Every look above does one of those two things. Once you spot the pattern, you can build outfits with an oversized tee without thinking about it twice.

Our tees are cut unisex oversized, with the same 240 GSM cotton and drape whichever way you wear it.
