How to style an oversized t-shirt: 7 looks for men

The oversized tee is the easiest thing in your wardrobe to wear, and one of the easiest to get slightly wrong. Worn lazily it reads as sleepwear. Worn with a little intent it carries an entire outfit. The difference is almost always in what you put on the bottom half and on your feet.

Here are seven ways to wear one that work, from barely trying to actually dressed.

Tee and wide-leg jeans

The default, for a reason. An oversized tee and a pair of wide or relaxed-leg jeans balance each other out. Loose on top, loose below, nothing fighting for attention. Keep the jeans a clean wash if you want it to look considered, lived-in if you want it casual. Chunky sneakers finish it.

Tee and cargos

Swap the jeans for cargos or parachute pants and the whole look leans more street. The utility pockets add texture, and a tapered or cuffed ankle stops the volume from getting out of hand. This is the one that does the most with the least effort.

A front tuck and straight trousers

To dress an oversized tee up, you have to give it some structure. Tuck just the front hem into a pair of straight or pleated trousers. The half-tuck defines your waist, keeps the drape at the back, and makes the tee look intentional rather than thrown on. Loafers or clean leather sneakers over canvas here.

Tee and shorts for the heat

For an Indian summer this is the honest answer. Oversized tee, mid-length shorts, slides or low sneakers. The trick is length. Your shorts should end around the knee so the proportions do not go top-heavy. Long tee over very short shorts is a common mistake that throws the whole balance off.

Layered under an open shirt

Wear the tee as the base and leave an overshirt or a light jacket open over it. This adds a layer of interest without hiding the graphic, and it works most of the year in cities that rarely get cold enough for anything heavier. An unbuttoned camp-collar shirt over a plain tee is a reliable move.

Tee and joggers, done properly

Joggers with an oversized tee can look like you gave up, or it can look deliberate. The fix is in the details. Pick joggers with a clean taper, keep the colours muted and matched, and wear a real pair of sneakers instead of slides. Now it reads as considered loungewear rather than laundry day.

Tee, tailored trousers, and white sneakers

The high-low look. Pair the most relaxed thing you own, the oversized tee, with the sharpest, a pair of tailored trousers, and let the contrast carry it. White sneakers keep the whole thing from tipping into formal. This is the outfit that looks like you did not try and absolutely did.

The one rule under all of them

Balance the volume. An oversized top wants a bottom half with some shape or some taper, so you stay loose in one place and clean in another. Get that proportion right and almost any pairing works.
